Chapter Six

Joe had ridden in a quad before. The cable company used them. But sitting behind Dan, their bodies touching—even through flannel and cotton, made the ride far more titillating and far more heart-stopping than heading out into a wilderness area where folks had no reason to build up a community in the first place while still needing high speed Internet. If I ever moved out to some glorious wilderness area I would not worry about Internet. I would not worry about a damned thing. Nuts. Some people are nuts.

He straddled Dan, his legs stretched out wide. He avoided looking toward his feet. It was a cross between sheer terror and the surge of a climax to be so close to another man. Dan’s rear was pressed up against his crotch—not to be sexy, but because that’s how they had to sit in the quad. It was glorious. He wrapped one arm around Dan’s waist and with the opposite hand gripped the roll bar. The land stretched out before them like a dream. Green fields with trees abutting the entire setting. Some fencing. A few cows. The pathway dipped downward. Joe’s belly tickled as if he was on a rollercoaster. He was laughing. He realized he had lost his constant self-consciousness as he noticed his titanium ankle peeking out from his pants. Well, hell. Horses. A new relationship. Who knew? He felt his food offering in his shirt pocket, still warm. A toaster waffle. Joe assured him the gods would love it. Apparently, the era had them not only loving attention, but junk food.

He wanted to rest his cheek against the back of Dan’s shoulder. That seemed like such a romantic act. Of course, they’d already had sex and were speaking about the future...maybe some romance wouldn’t be too off base. It was funny how one could suck another man’s cock, but not cuddle him until more of a relationship than sex was established. Joe did it. He nestled his face against Dan’s shoulder. No tenseness. No negative reaction. No “get thee behind me Satan.”

“I like that,” Dan called. The sound of the quad’s engine nearly drowned him out. “You...being familiar. I like that.”

Joe lifted his head and replied, hoping his voice carried over the din. “I had figured it was all right, since we were intimate.”

Dan patted Joe’s hand, resting against his belly. “And we will again.”

The quad breezed across the dry grassy ground, eventually reaching a gentle rise, then following a slight downward slope to a creek bed.

Dan slowed, then stopped. “If we go down too far, we’ll get stuck in the mud. Quad stays here. See those maples? Let’s pick out a big leaf.”

They stepped off the quad and joined hands as they walked along the gently sloping path to the creek. The maples grew in a grove just up from the water. Tall, thick, and filled with thousands of perfect leaves. Dan squeezed Joe’s hand. “Isn’t this about the most perfect setting?”

Joe looked hard at Dan. “It’s beautiful.
